Mädchen Bands I love, Part 2: Wir sind Helden Mar 20, 2008 7:17 AM Another German band: Wir sind Helden (We Are Heroes). Contrary to the Beatsteaks , the "Helden" sing in German, though they do occasionally make exceptions. Their lyrics are wonderfully poetic, often very tongue-in-cheek and very pun-heavy. The puns especially make them difficult to translate, but some brave souls have tried (and often succeeded) anyway. So, first off, my favourite Helden song of all: "Nur ein Wort" (Just one word). The video is an hommage to Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues". I think it's brilliant. :) Their latest single "Soundso": Audience favourite "Denkmal" (Memorial): And my very favourite Helden video on YouTube: acoustic versions of "Nur ein Wort" and "Von hier an blind", performed in a Dutch elevator (!): Of course, there's SO much more, for example: The ultimate geek anthem: "The Geek (shall inherit)" The wonderfully sad "Darf ich das behalten?" (Can I keep this?) German , English , French and Japanese versions of "Von hier an blind" (From here on blind). "Wenn es passiert" (When it happens), which made them somewhat well-known in the Netherlands, because a Dutch TV channel regularly played it during the 2006 World Cup. They also got the chance to participate in the first ever iTunes Foreign Exchange : they covered +44's "When Your Heart Stops Beating" , +44 in turn covered Wir sind Helden's "Guten Tag" . Funnily enough, I prefer both cover versions to the originals. :)

Mädchen Bands I love, Part 1: The Beatsteaks Nov 16, 2007 4:45 PM I first saw the Beatsteaks live in 2002 *. I'd liked them before, but it was that gig that made me really fall in love with them. I got to see them live a second time and I truly believe I still haven't seen a better live band than those 5 guys. That's (part of the reason) why I'm surprised they're still - after 5 albums - not better known outside their homeland Germany and the neighbouring countries. Anyway, here it goes... ;) I guess, a good place to start would be their (probably) best-known song (internationally that is): "I don't care as long as you sing" From the same album ("Smack Smash"): "Hand In Hand" And one of their most recent singles: "Jane Became Insane" I really don't want to bore you, but there's just SO much more: "Vintage" Beatsteaks with bad hairstyles but impressive acrobatics (make sure to watch the end), adorable holiday videos feat. synchronised drumming , a lovely tribute to Joe Strummer , a German version of Fu Manchu's "Hell On Wheels" , a cute take on "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" , pure adorableness , lots of laughter and still more . To finish off - just because I love it so much - guitarist Peter Baumann singing "Hey du": *Not actually from the gig I went to, but it's the only video I could find from that year. ;)
Mädchen Do you know "PostCrossing"? Sep 24, 2007 9:10 AM Somebody recently told me about this website and I immediately fell in love with the idea. "The goal of this project is to allow people to receive postcards from all over the world, for free. Well, almost. The main line is: if you send a postcard, you'll receive at least one back, from a random postcrosser somewhere in the world." I´ve sent my first few cards to Finland, Japan and the United States. Can´t wait to receive some in return. :)
Performita Welcome to Croatia - iPhone hacked Aug 13, 2007 4:07 AM Yes, it works. iPhone can be used in Europe with a lot of hacking job to do. The job includes cloning the SIM card which is kind of illegal, but so is use of iPhone here I guess. Beautiful Croatian island Krk became famous this days not only because of great beaches, clear Adriatic sea and old buildings but because of a young man named Saša. He published a guide in hackin0sh, a fast growing Internet forum for all those lads that want to be fashionable in areas without AT&T Cingular service. This hack includes using your SIM card (has to be SuperSIM - V1, U types), SIM Reader/Writer, SilverCard and some nice files to download. Unlock work on computers equipped with both Mac OS (separate procedure) or Windows operating systems. After the unlock, the phone uses regular GSM or EDGE network for cellphone connectivity, or Wi-Fi connection point when EDGE connection is not available. However, there is just one small fallback - YouTube does not work. Given the limited number of results that you get on YouTube anyways, this does not seem to be a great loss. The funniest thing of them all is the fact that you have to use iTunes to activate the iPhone, while that service is not available in Croatia at all. This is due to the fact that Europeans have more strict regs about interoperability and that Apple Croatia has other things on its mind in August. But hey, it's not that Croatia has Nokia Club as well. It's only a 4.5 million people market that owns over three million mobile phones. We the Croats are quite a mobile phone obsessed nation :D
